#LIVINGROOMTODAY
2015–2017 · Live performance series simulcast across 3+ countries per show · Creator, director, platform builder
It started as my birthday in 2015. I was playing in a band in Australia, my friends were in Rochester and my house was in New York, and I wanted everyone in the same room. So I built one out of cameras, projectors and a website. Every venue was wired with its own camera and projector, and whoever was performing at their venue became the main screen for everyone else, with the other rooms as side feeds and a live chat running around it. A bedroom in Malaysia got the same stage as a club in LA. Over two years it grew to more than ten shows, 50 to 100 performers and fifteen countries, landing at China Chalet in New York, Club Pro LA, the Musashino Art Museum in Tokyo, Palais de Tokyo, the Whitney, a 35-foot yacht in the Pacific and a lot of bedrooms. This was years before the pandemic made livestreamed shows normal, when the tech was mostly held together with tape. The bet was that an unknown artist anywhere was as worth watching as a name on a marquee, and once the room was wired right, the audience could tell. It was covered by Vice, Obey and Curate.LA, and it lives on today as The Gay Matrix.
